NPF general convention endorses Rio as president

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, Sept 21 - The general convention of Naga Peoples Front (NPF) led by Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio has unanimously endorsed the partys Central Executive Councils decision of August 13 to elect him as the full-fledged president of the party.

A big gathering of party workers which the party claimed to be 60,000-plus at Dimapur District Sports Complex stadium here on Wednesday, the Rio-led NPF attacked Liezietsu accusing him of being autocratic, dictatorial, undemocratic and unconstitutional while running the affairs of the party as president leading to the present crisis.

During the convention, friends-turned-foes-turned-friends Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio assured party workers to uphold the principles and ideologies of the party.

Congratulating Rio and taking a dig at Liezietsu, Zeliang, in his address, was optimistic that the Election Commission would allot the Cock symbol of NPF to the party led by Rio. He reasoned that when the majority of Central Executive Council members numbering 103 out of 163 endorsed Rio as the party president, there is no reason why the ECI will not allot the party symbol to them.

Zeliang also called for change in the system to fight corruption in the State, saying pinpointing faults will not lead anywhere.

On alliance with BJP, the Chief Minister allayed fears that the NPF MLAs will merge with the saffron party. But the NPF will continue its coalition with BJP, he said.

In his address, Rio said there should always be a provision in a party to impeach its president if he/she is not working according to the constitution of the party and for welfare of the people.

He advised the NPF-led DAN (Democratic Alliance of Nagaland) Government to govern mindfully to deliver justice to the people and take their problems on a priority basis.

A government must listen to the voice of the people and not confront our people, he stated while underscoring the need for focusing on women and youth policy.
