DHUBRI, Nov 7 - To keep their village clean and keep the youth involved in some work, away from anti-social activities, the residents of Soulmari Part-2 village, clean every nook and corner of their village, every Sunday. The residents took up this activity to clean their village since the month of September this year, where both men and women from all age groups participate. The female members of the families have taken the initiative to clean the areas surrounding their houses, while the males clean the streets, bridges, lanes, bylanes, ponds, school and religious places, said Mahabul Hossain, an educationist and senior citizen of the village.

The village under Kacharihat Gaon Panchayat has one LP school, one temple and a mosque, with historical significance related to the Gauripur Zamindary Estate. The villagers start cleaning their village early in the morning till 9 am, each Sunday, when it is not raining. Hossain explains that the youths of their village had got involved in various anti-social activities that had increased during the lockdown period. Significantly, the cleaning activity was not only limited to just making the village free from dirt and waste. The society as such has also improved, the villagers have started becoming more united, the participation of the youth in every activity of the village has increased and by now they have completely left whatever anti-social activities they were engaged in, Hossain said.

Biswajit Roy, a local political leader, added People from all communities are coming together to participate in the cleanliness drive every Sunday, irrespective of religion and caste. Families are participating in it voluntarily and many kids are also seen coming out and cleaning whichever part of the village they can.

However, the villagers complain that there are huge potholes near the bridges that have posed to be life-threatening for the commuters and demanded their immediate repair.
