Notices to 7 candidates over poll expenses

GUWAHATI, April 6 - In connection with violation of expenditure-related rules laid down by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Returning Officer for Hajo LAC under Kamrup Election District, has served notices to seven candidates contesting in the ensuing Assembly election.

In Hajo LAC, Mujibur Rahman (AIUDF), Hemanta Kalita (Independent), Tripti Kana Majumdar Choudhury (Independent), Tabibar Rahman (Rastriya Secular Congress), Makoni Barman (Rastriya Pragati Party), Ramen Chandra Lahkar (Independent) and Rekibuddin Ahmed (Samajwadi Party) have been served notice for not complying with the rules of the ECI.

According to expenditure rules laid down by the ECI, each contesting candidate has to open a separate bank account exclusively for the purpose of election expenditure and all money to be spent on electioneering shall be deposited in this bank account irrespective of its funding from any source including the candidate�s own source. The candidates have to maintain an expenditure register and the register in question should be brought for scrutiny on the days notified for the purpose.

�But due to the non-compliance of some of the rules and guidelines, these seven candidates have been served notice and requested to submit their replies immediately,� official sources said.
