Northeastern States celebrate Christmas

SHILLONG, Dec 25 - Meghalaya today celebrated Christmas with people attending church services and exchanging gifts amongst friends and relatives.

Archbishop of Shillong Archdiocese, Reverend Dominic Jala, led the midnight Christmas mass at the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians.

Churches, shops and schools have been illuminated with lights and other Christmas decorations. The giant pine tree at the All Saints� Church at IGP point in the State capital here has been lit up making it a major attraction.

The festival has attracted hundreds of tourists to the State Capital. Many were seen happy clicking pictures with the illuminated buildings and other decoration in the background at Police Bazaar.

PTI adds from Shillong: Christmas was celebrated throughout Meghalaya with midnight services in churches.

A special programme for the hearing-impaired believers was organised in one of the oldest churches here at Police Bazaar.

Individual artistes and gospel bands enthralled crowds with traditional Christmas songs like �Jingle Bells�, �Oh Holy Night� and �Santa Claus Is Coming to Town� during road rallies.

Kohima: Christmas was celebrated today throughout Nagaland as believers offered prayers for peace and unity in the Naga society.

People in new clothes visited friends and relatives, extended greetings, offered cakes and held midnight services in churches and colonies as the sky lit up with fire crackers bursting from midnight.

Nagaland Governor PB Acharya in his message on the occasion of Christmas, said, �the spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love and generosity and of goodness.�

Chief Minister TR Zeliang extended best wishes and hoped that �the birth of the Prince of Peace would usher in the dawn of peace, goodwill and harmony in individuals and society.� � PTI

Aizawl: Christmas was celebrated today today in the Christian-dominated State of Mizoram.

The yuletide shopping spree also reached its height with a large number of villagers coming to the State capital for buying new clothes, cakes and home decors.

Prayers and worship services were held in the churches at midnight.

Almost all the streets in Aizawl were decorated with lights and people were seen thronging the streets with family members and friends.

The State Governmnet has arranged additional power for Christmas celebrations.
