North East Games begins in Imphal

IMPHAL,March 3 - With the active participation from eight Northeastern states, the six day long 2nd edition of the National Level North East Games (NLNEG) got underway at the Khuman Lampak main stadium here on Wednesday.

The opening function which was marked with a colourful march past parade followed by a number of cultural programmes was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Manipur Olympic Association president and PHED Minister I Hemochandra as chief guest and functional president respectively.

Around 1020 players (including 100 officials) from the eight NE states will be competing in seven disciplines including Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Football, Judo, Table Tennis and Weight Lifting. Manipur is represented by 191 players and officials while Nagaland by 118. Assam with 73 has the least number of participants.

On the first day of the Games-Nagaland played a 1-1 draw against Tripura in men�s football while host Manipur thrashed Sikkim 14-0 in women�s football.

The centrally sponsored games is being held under the scheme of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Department of Sports, New Delhi in place of the erstwhile Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan. Besides the North East Games, rural sports competitions, sports competitions exclusively for women and sports competitions for Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas are being organised under the scheme.

Chief de mission of the Manipur team K Shantikumar while speaking to the media sounded quite optimistic regarding the host team�s prospects in the second edition.
