North East badminton gets under way

IMPHAL, Oct 28 - Host Manipur will meet Mizoram while neighbouring Assam team will clash with Meghalaya teams in the semifinals (senior team) of the ongoing 4-day North East zone inter state badminton championship which begins here in Imphal from Wednesday.

Host Manipur beat Arunachal Pradesh 3-1 while Mizoram beat Nagaland 3-0 in the senior team category. Similarly Assam team beat Sikkim by 3-0 while Meghalaya team defeated Tripura 3-1 in the same category.

In the junior team matches, Arunachal Pradesh junior team beat Mizoram team in boys single (Laa Talar beat Steven Lalhriatpuia), girls single (Pinky Karke beat Lalvenhimi) and boys doubles (Laa Talar/Jokom Ribya bt John VK Hruaitluanga/Malsawmsanga) matches while host Manipur beat Meghalaya. In boys singles (L Unilkumar bt Kiefer W Shullai) and in girls single (N Angita bt Shaija Chetri). In boys double (K Manjit/K Dinku bt Kiefer W Shullai/Ritu Raj Nag) matches.

The follow up matches will be played tomorrow morning. Earlier in the day, the championship was formally inaugurated by Additional DGP Manipur LM Khaute. The inaugural function was presided by the IGP(Zone-II) Lupheng Kailun in presence of Loktak Development Authority Project Director L Bhagaton Singh as guest of honour.

Altogether 140 players, 35 men, 30 women, 5 each of boys and girls, 19 officials from eight NE States including Sikkim are participating in the meet.
