Nominations filed for Arunachal RS polls

ITANAGAR, June 9 � Mukut Mithi, the official nominee of Congress and BJP�s Tapen Siga, an ex-legislator, on Monday filed their nominations for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Arunachal Pradesh, according to an official source in the State Assembly Secretariat.

June 9 was the last date for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha polls scheduled on June 19 next. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on Tuesday at 11 am, the official source added.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 12, and counting of votes will take place on the date of polling, June 19.

The lone Rajya Sabha seat in Arunachal Pradesh has fallen vacant following the expiry of term of office of incumbent Mukut Mithi on May 26 last.

Rajya Sabha members are elected by MLAs by the method of indirect election in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote.

In the 60-member Assembly in Arunachal Pradesh, the ruling Congress has 42 members as against the opposition BJP�s 11 followed by PPA 5 and independents 2.

�Despite knowing the fact that we don�t have sufficient representation in the State Assembly, yet we have decided to field our candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat. We will fight the elections in true spirit of democracy,� the BJP Legislature Party leader Tamiyo Taga had said.
