No safe drinking water in west Silchar

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 23 - Citizens of Chandrapur, Jaifarpur, Rengti, Budhurail and Bhakarpur of west Silchar do not have safe drinking water to drink. In a memorandum to the Executive Engineer, PHE Division II, people of the area have alleged that it is because of the sloppy approach of the Public Health Engineering Department in starting the water supply scheme at the Ghagra river they are suffering.

In the words of Biplab Kumar Goswami, general secretary of Grahak Suraksha Samiti and Himanshu Kumar Das, general secretary of the West Silchar Anchalik Grahak Suraksha Samiti of the district, government had taken up a water supply scheme almost five years ago. We went to the area and found that only because of 10 per cent of incomplete work, people are suffering and deprived of safe drinking water, Himanshu Kumar Das said.

Reacting to the allegation, Dipak Das, executive engineer of PHE Division II said that he will visit the site on Friday. There is a need to form a central committee and all the five schemes should be run together for maintaining the logistics and for taking care of the expenses, Das said.
