No let-up in State positivity rate

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 - There has been no let-up in the COVID-19 positivity rate in the State with the lockdowns and restrictions not yielding the results the government had expected.

The positivity rate on Tuesday was 7.24 per cent. The rate has been gradually rising since the first week of August when it was below 4 per cent.

A total of 2,684 cases were detected yesterday out of 37,066 tests conducted across the State. Kamrup Metro district recorded the highest number of detections at 618. The coronavirus tally in the State stands at 111,724, while the death toll is 315.

According to Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the positivity rate in Guwahati has gone up to 12 per cent. This is the result of not wearing masks and not maintaining social distance, he said.

Sarma today conducted a fresh review of the States preparedness and current situation of COVID-19 in Assam during a video conference with deputy commissioners. We cant afford to lower our guards, he said.

Sarmas deputy Pijush Hazarika said with more and more patients wanting to get treated at government facilities, the health department is contemplating on converting the Covid care centres to treatment centres.

Currently, asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic patients are kept at these Covid care centres. Patients are now opting for government facilities. During a meeting, we have taken a decision to convert the Covid care centres to treatment facilities, he added.
