KOLKATA, Oct 12: Arguably the greatest football player of all time, Pele, began his second visit to this metropolis after 38 years amidst abundant enthusiasm that would perhaps match his first visit to the city with the New York Cosmos team. Since his arrival on Sunday morning, three World Cup winning member of the Brazilian team was cynosure of all eyes.
The soccer crazy Kolkata gave the Brazilian legend a fitting welcome as he emerged from the arrival lounge to the thunderous cheering of thousands outside the airport. Pele knew Kolkatans loved him like any of his compatriot.
Meeting the media for the first time this morning, Pele began in a negative note as the first question on the happening in FIFA did not interest him. He not only refused to comment on the crisis that has gripped FIFA but made it clear that he has no intention to run for the FIFA Presidents post.
The Black Pearl was asked to choose the greatest between the two: Lionel Messi of Argentina or Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal. In the last 10 years or so, Messi was the best. Ronaldo plays in the striking zone and tries to score while Messi plays deeper in the midfield and has a different style. In my team I would love to have both, was his answer. Being a Brazilian, Pele said Neymar was also a good player and the one to be watched in future.
Who was the greatest Brazilian player? Pele deftly sidestepped and felt it was not fair to name just one. When I started to play at 17, There were a lot of excellent players. Everybody said Pele was fantastic. Its difficult to say who the best was. Its difficult to pick one, he informed. Pele will be among the spectators to watch ATK play Kerala Blasters in an ISL game on Tuesday and his presence will certainly inspire the two finalists of last year to perform their best. The Brazilian legend went through a packed schedule on Monday.
