No BJP decision on Cong dissidents

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 28 The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not taken any decision to take a few dissident legislators of the Congress into the party fold.

It was reported that a few dissident MLAs of the Congress were in touch with senior leaders of the BJP and they might join the party soon. But sources in the BJP told The Assam Tribune that the saffron party has not yet taken any decision to take in the dissidents.

BJP sources said that a number of persons from other political parties including a few Congress dissidents did get in touch with BJP leaders, but the party has not yet taken any decision. The central leadership has also not sought the views of the State unit in this regard.

Sources said that whenever a senior leader of any other party, who is well known to the people, wants to come over to the BJP, the central leaders may take a decision in this regard. But in case of others, the views of the state unit of the party are taken. The credentials of the persons concerned, his or her credibility, public image etc., would be examined before accepting a person from any party into the fold of the BJP. So far, the BJPs central leaders have not sought the views of the State unit on the desire of any Congress dissident to join the party.

Sources further said the BJP would have to look into the interests of those who were with the party during the troubled times before promising election tickets to persons who are trying to join the BJP when the party is in power in Delhi. Moreover, if any dissident legislator of the Congress shifts to the BJP, he or she will lose membership of the Assembly under the provisions of the Anti Defection Act.
