NLFT on revival path, three collaborators held in Khowai

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, July 6 - Amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, three National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) collaborators were arrested from Khowai districts Champahower, thus causing fear of revival of insurgency in the tribal areas before the ADC elections.

The arrested NLFT collaborators were identified as Nirban Debbarma ((43) of Ramdewan Choudhury Para, Ramakanta Debbarma and Samaresh Debbarma (37) of Naliabari under Champahower Police Station of Khowai subdivision.

After preliminary interrogation, Nirban and Samaresh were produced before a local court in Khowai on Sunday seeking police remand for further interrogation.

However, the court sent the collaborators to jail remand and sought a case diary of the FIR. The court will consider their remand after examining the FIR and relevant evidence, including confessional statement.

During interrogation, Nirban and Samaresh told police that they had started extortion for reviving the outlawed organisation NLFT, which is on the revival process under the guidance of Utpal Debbarma, once foreign secretary of the outlawed group.

They informed that they had sent huge amounts collected by way of extortion to Utpal Debbarma, who is now at his hideout in Bangladesh. Based on their confessional statements, police arrested one more NLFT collaborator named Ramakanta Debbarma.

Intelligence inputs confirmed that a sizable number of surrendered militants had already aligned with the Utpal Debbarma-led outlawed group which is seen as a security threat before the ADC election.

TTAADC is expected to go to election in October as scheduled polls could not take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
