NIA officer's wife succumbs to injuries

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, Apr 13 (PTI): The 10-day battle for saving the life of Farzana Khatoon, wife of NIA officer Tanzil Ahmad who was shot dead on April 3, ended today after she succumbed to bullet injuries at AIIMS hospital.

46-year-old Farzana, who was shifted from Fortis hospital to AIIMS trauma centre few days back, breathed her last at 10:45 AM. She was laid to rest along with her husband at Okhla graveyard.

She had received four bullets in her stomach in the same attack in which her 47-year-old husband was killed after three assassins pumped 24 bullets into his body.

The husband-wife duo along with two children were returning from a family function when they were attacked.

Ahmad, an NIA Inspector, was killed while she was seriously injured in the firing by motorcycle-borne assailants.

Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two alleged killers including a relative of Ahmad even as the alleged mastermind, Muneer, is still absconding.

Police has claimed that domestic dispute was the motive behind the crime. Among the two arrested is nephew of the NIA officer's brother-in-law Rehan. The other accused has been identified as Zainul.

According to police, the motorcycle-borne accused followed Ahmad who was returning home in Sahaspur village of Bijnor district with his family after attending his niece's wedding in another village in the same district on the intervening night of April 2 and 3.

The attackers overtook his vehicle at Sahaspur village and Muneer allegedly fired at Ahmed and his wife.

Ahmad, who has been with the NIA ever since the organisation was formed in February 2009, had been investigating many cases especially related to banned Indian Mujahideen terror outfit. His superiors termed him as a thorough professional in intelligence gathering as well as investigation.
