By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, March 22 - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Directors General of Police of Assam and Mizoram, calling for a detailed report on the alleged physical assault and lathicharge on journalists by Assam Police at Zophai Bairabi area in Kolasib district of Mizoram near the Assam border.

Official sources said that the journalists were assaulted while on a reporting assignment on March 8 and 10. The officers have been given four weeks to respond. The commission has issued these directions after taking cognizance of a complaint.

Allegedly, the victim journalists had gone to Zophai to prepare a ground report as there was tension between Mizo Zirlai Pawl, a student organisation of Mizoram, and Assam Police, which escalated due to lathicharge by Assam Police on the journalists. The police also fired gun shots during the action.

It was also mentioned in the complaint that the journalists carried their identity cards, but they were beaten up. Many of the journalists, including women, sustained serious injuries.

The Mizoram Journalists Association called a general body meeting at the Aizawl Press Club Conference Hall on March 12. It also organised a sit-in demonstration on March 13.
