NHRC chairman inaugurates seminar

AIZAWL, April 7 - Acting Chairman of National Commission for Human Rights (NHRC) Cyriac Joseph today inaugurated a two-day national seminar on Human Rights at Mizoram University Auditorium, at the outskirts of Aizawl. The national seminar is being organised jointly by NHRC and Mizoram University.

The national seminar has as its theme, �Protection of Human Rights and Assuring the Unity and Integrity of the Nation�. MZU Vice Chancellor Prof R Lalthantluanga, Delhi Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Jain, Prof Nand Kishore Acharya, from IIT Hyderabad and NHRC Assistant Director Dr SK Shukla also attended the first day of the seminar and addressed the gathering.

Cyriac Joseph in his speech said that protection of human rights while upholding the diverse cultures, different languages, different religions of the people, is important for national integration.

He exhorted the students of Mizoram University to continue with the truism that Universities in different parts of the world are places where new thinking and imagination are expressed. He also asked the university students not to use their very freedom at the cost of national integration. Member and acting Chairman of NHRC, Cyriac Joseph is a former Supreme Court Judge and had served as Chief Justice in Karnataka and Uttarakhand High Courts.
