NHPC�s anti-erosion measure swept away

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, April 3 � The anti-erosion measure taken up by the National Hydro-electrical Power Corporation (NHPC), engaged in the construction of the power plant dam on the river Subansiri at Gerukamukh, on the downstream areas of the river in Lakhimpur has been swept away by the rising water as rain lashed the region since yesterday.

The erosion protection measure with geo-fabric bags on a stretch of 32 meters was washed away by the rising water of the Subansiri in Katori Chapori area under Kadam Revenue Circle of Lakhimpur district on Thursday. Besides sweeping away the geo-fabric bags the rising river eroded a large portion of the area affecting thousands of people in number of villages on this downstream area of Subansiri. The erosion affected people in No. 2 Rupahi, No. 2 South Rupahi, Haladhiati, Bharatpur, Jorhatiya, Kamalpur, Sivapur, Konchgaon and Hajonggaon villages under Kadam Revenue Circle of Lakhimpur district. The erosion also swept away three households in No. 2 South Rupahi village of Katori Chapori.

Flexituff, a company that manufactures geo-fabric bags has been engaged in the construction of this anti-erosion work on the river in Katori Chapori on demonstration basis. As public anger and resentment grew since yesterday, the NHPC authorities in Gerukamukh has halted the anti-erosion measure works on downstream areas of the river Subansiri.
