TEOK, Aug 10 Angry residents blocked the National Highway 37 near Gual Gaon Tin-ali here this morning in protest against the recurring artificial floods in the tiny township.

The protesters, comprising mostly women, shouted slogans against the failure of the State Government and the town committee officials to tackle the situation. The protesters criticized the local MLA Membor Gogoi for failing to solve the artificial flood problem faced by the residents of his constituency.

The protesters ended the blockade after one-and-a-half hours after getting an assurance from the district administration to solve the problem at the earliest. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Jorhat.

It may be mentioned here that due to poor drainage system and encroachment beside the canals and rivulets inside the town area, most of the residents of Ward No.3 and 4 of this township have to remain under knee-deep water during the whole rainy season. The problem has worsened day by day but the authorities have remained mute spectators and failed to take any steps to solve the problem, alleged senior citizens here.
