GUWAHATI, May 5 � Extending a helping hand in the hours of crisis in the earthquake-hit Nepal, a group of non-profit voluntary organizations have taken initiative from Assam for providing relief to the affected people in the Himalayan nation.
Club 25 International Assam, National Youth Welfare Association, Ashadeep, Disaster Mitigation Society and United Nation Online Volunteers of India have launched a project billed �Support� for helping the quake-hit people of Nepal.
The NGOs have sought the support of the people of the entire region to cooperate and donate relief materials like mineral water, water purifiers, disinfectants, dry food like chira, gur, biscuits, dry fruits, etc., small bath soaps, milk for babies, sanitary pads, general medicines, baby food and tents among others.
Project head of �Support�, Hemajit Phukan told The Assam Tribune that no cash would be collected as part of the relief items. �The list of items has been prepared after a discussion with our volunteers and friends in Nepal. We want the people of the region to extend their wholehearted support to the people of the neighbouring country in this crisis. If possible, the donation of tents would be a great help to the people,� he added.
The NGOs also appealed to the people to donate only those items which are in good and usable condition and to check the expiry date of the medicines and baby food before donating, to ensure that it actually provide some relief to the people.
The office of �Support� project is located at House No. 3, Madhab Kamal Path, Ulubari, Guwahati.
The collection of relief material has already been started and the relief team would leave for Nepal on May 10. The NGOs also thanked the Government of India for bearing the major transportation cost of the relief operation.
�We have experts who have worked in various relief operations including Tamil Nadu�s tsunami, Latur�s earthquake, Uttarakhand disaster, Assam flood, and floods in Mumbai and Yabatmal in Maharastra. We have provided relief, including shelter, food and clothes, medical help and basic necessities to the victims of the natural calamities,� he added.
