NGOs demand probe into all missing women

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, April 19 With about 22 women reported missing in Manipur till April 17 this year, several women bodies and civil society organisations have demanded a thorough investigation into the cases.

We are demanding proper investigations into the missing reports of women in the State, Women Action for Development (WAD) Secretary Sobita Mangsatabam told media persons here on Saturday. Were also demanding action against police officials who failed to conduct proper investigations, she added.

The move of the women body came two days after the news of finding a missing housewife who was cremated four years ago, along with a new husband and a child, hit the headlines of local dailies.

L Choaba, the husband of the missing housewife, found his wife Konthoujam Naobi hiding in a village with her mother, a new-born child and a new husband, during an independent search.

However, everyone is questioning the identity of the body of an unknown woman which was recovered from near Ithai village in Bishnupur district about three days after the missing report of Naobi was filed.

We need the identity of the unknown body which was cremated as the missing housewife (Naobi), says Sobita. Why is the police not investigating it, she questioned.

According to Sobita, a total of about 22 women were reported missing in Manipur till April 17 this year while 84 women went missing last year.

Legal counsel of WAD informed that they are in the process of filing a public interest litigation in the missing cases of about 13 women in the court.
