GUWAHATI, May 7 � Strongly condemning the role of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), district administration and the State government for their utter negligence towards the recurrent problem of waterlogging, the Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) have warned of strong public movement on the issue.
�It�s not an issue to be neglected. After every small spell of showers, the city roads get submerged in artificial floods, affecting the traffic flow. The problem is getting deteriorated with every passing year, but unfortunately, our authorities have turned a deaf ear towards the public demands on the issue,� Dhiren Baruah, president SGBG told The Assam Tribune.
Areas like Panbazar (near Harisabha), Lakhtokia, Dakhin Sarania, New Sarania, Japarogog and Manik Nagar witnessed waterlogging after a quick spell of rain today afternoon.
�Endless numbers of letters and memorandums have been submitted to GMC, GMDA, GDD, Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, district administration and other government departments but problem is still the same. If the authorities continue to cold-shoulder our demands, the common people would take to streets in the days to come,� Baruah added.
�Extensive drainage cleaning drives are a must in the city at regular intervals. Moreover, some permanent measures should be taken to control siltation of Bharalu and Bahini rivulets. SGBG have submitted many proposals for the scientific solution of this perennial problem but nothing has been done to address this issue,� Baruah lamented.
He further mentioned that some urgent steps are required before the monsoons. �Last year, the city witnessed worst of waterloggings, if steps are not taken in time, the situation would aggravate this year,� he added.
