NGO slams govt bid to dehorn rhinos

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 29 The non government organisation Seujee Dharanee the green earth on Thursday strongly condemned the proposed dehorning of one horned rhinoceros. It said that the proposed move of dehorning is reflective of the massive failure of the State Government in protecting and managing the one horned rhinoceros the pride of Assam which is included in the Schedule-I of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act. 1972.

In this connection, the organisation submitted a letter to Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court requesting his timely intervention and necessary action to prevent injustice towards wild animals.

The proposal to dehorn the heritage animal of Assam is against the spirit of conservation of nature. This is unethical and violation of right to life of wild animals. Government is not the owner of the forest and wild resources. They are just like a close trustee. The governments role is to protect and improve the resources by providing proper security and natural justice. But the government it seems just want to take a short cut to hide their failure, said Satya Ranjan Borah, president cum programme director, Seujee Dharanee the green earth.

Seujee Dharanee the green earth has appealed to the people to raise their voices to stop this kind of proposed illogical step of the government. It has particularly called upon all the wildlife experts, scholars, academicians, NGOs, educational institutions, students and even the political party leaders to come forward beyond their respective boundary of limitations for the sake of identity and heritage conservation of Assam.

The horn is the only identity of Assam rhinos and even of Assam in global context for which people from all over the world rush to our place. If this kind of brutal decision of Govt of Assam would take a shape than we would lose our identity and revenue, said the organisation.
