NGO seeks Tura as Winter Capital

By Correspondent

TURA, June 7 - Raising the pitch for Tura to be declared the Winter Capital of the State, the Achik Youth Council (AYC) today sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma seeking his consideration on the move.

We face much inconvenience in visiting State capital Shillong as we have to travel over 300 km, spending a reasonable amount of money on travel, stay and fooding. Moreover, the expenses increase if we have to stay long, said Dimseng Marak, president of AYC. The NGO added that many people cannot afford to spend a huge amount of money if a certain requires multiple visits.

Tura is the second largest urban town in the state and headquarters of the Garo Hills region, but no there is no directorate-level office of the State Government, except the MBOSE, said AYC general secretary Soshan Sangma.

We are all aware that residents of Khasi/Jaintia Hills dont even have to come to Tura for MBOSE-related work as there is a section of the department there as well. The full-fledged establishment of the MBOSE Cell in Shillong is indeed laudable initiative. We also want the same kind of facility and benefits to save us the trouble of unnecessary visits to Shillong for every purpose, added the NGO.

The NGO said that the move would boost the economy of Garo Hills if directorates of more departments were set up in Garo Hills. We, on behalf of the people of Garo Hills earnestly request your kind attention into the matter and to understand the problems of the people of Garo Hills region. We believe that the state government will initiate the necessary steps and solve the perennial problems at the earliest, added Dimseng.
