NGO Forum lashes out at anti-Kaziranga campaign

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 5 - The Assam Environmental NGO Forum today expressed its deep concern at the propaganda launched against Kaziranga National Park by Survival International in active parleys with BBC Televisions bringing disrepute to the successful history of Kaziranga in protecting the pride of Assam the rhino.

The NGO Forum alleged that Survival International was campaigning against Kaziranga either due to vested interests they may have to instigate rhino poaching in Kaziranga, or they were misled by some mischievous elements aiding illegal wildlife trade.

The AENF appeals to the international community not to give any attention to such mala-fide campaign launched by Survival International against Kaziranga National Park. Rhinos are being targeted by well-organized gangs of poachers having access arms threatening not only the rhinos, but also the frontline forest guards patrolling day and night to protect the rhinos from becoming extinct to ensure that future mankind can see the rhinos alive, it said in a statement.

Pointing out that poachers are being killed not just in Kaziranga National Park to protect precious wild animals, but across many protected areas in the world including countries like South Africa, Zimbabwe, the NGO Forum questioned why Survival International was targeting Kaziranga National Park.

What is the motive of Survival International asking international tourist not to visit Kaziranga? Are they instigating rhino poaching in Kaziranga and for whose interest they are working for? it asked.

The AENF has appealed to international tourists not to heed the propaganda launched by Survival International in association with the BBC, which is totally baseless and uncalled for.
