SHILLONG, April 10 - Demand for death sentence to a rape and murder accused has been aired during a gathering of women�s organisation here in the State Capital.
In the Seng Teilang Kynthei-organised candle march here several women in the gathering demanded that death sentence be accorded to Vicky Syiemlieh, accused of rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl.
�In order to convey its deepest sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family of Shailinia Kharrymba (victim) and with one voice, the huge gathering asked for nothing less than death sentence for accused Vicky Syiemlieh,� president of Civil Society Women�s Organisation (CSWO), Irene Hujon said.
Threatening that the public would be forced to take �extreme measures for the sake of justice,� if swift action is not taken against the accused, the women�s organisation said, the prime accused cannot be given safety within the confines of Shillong District Jail.
Shailinia of Saw Mer Shiteng, Upper Shillong was allegedly raped and murdered on March 17 this year after she ventured out of her house in the evening. The body of the victim was later recovered in the nearby jungle of the village. The mother of the accused, in fact, handed over her son to the police after he confessed to her about the crime.
Reportedly, the accused has informed before the police about his accomplices who were also behind the crime. The police are on the lookout for these accused.
Meanwhile, in a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Law, Rowell Lyngdoh and Home Minister, Roshan Warjri, CSWO has demanded that a special prosecutor be appointed in the case to speed up the trial.
�This incident, which sent shock waves throughout Meghalaya is no different from the Nirbhaya incident of December 16, 2012, where a young 23 year-old girl was gangraped in the National Capital, New Delhi,� Hujon stated in the memorandum.
