NFR pensioners pay homage to music maestro

GUWAHATI, Nov 19 � The NF Railway Pensioners� Association paid homage to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on November 14, a press release said.

About 100 pensioners and senior citizens attended the meeting held at Pension Bhawan, Maligaon. Pensioners from Nagaon, Dimapur and other places attended the meeting.

Earlier on November 8, M Panging, president of the Pandu branch paid floral tributes to the legend at Judges� Field. All pensioners in the meeting observed silence for a minute in honour of Dr Hazarika. The meeting was presided over by M Panging, president of the Pandu branch.

A M Roy, working president (Central) JM Biswas, general secretary, SM Kanjilal, joint general secretary and BL Nath, secretary PR participated as speakers and said that Dr Hazarika was associated with IPTA at Guwahati and Sanskritik Parishad at Pandu-Maligaon in the 50 decade. He was not only a singer and composer, but also a music director and director of various films and honoured for his golden voice in international arena. During the period from 1953 he continued to attend most cultural functions in Pandu and stated that his demise was not only a loss for Assam, but for the country.

The speakers highlighted the various aspects of the life of Dr Bhupen Hazarika and said that he was the mouthpiece of downtrodden and underprivileged people and all his writings and songs highlighted the problems of the masses. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1993 and Padmabibhushan in 2001 were among many honours bestowed on him by the nation. BL Nath of the pensioners� association read out his self-composed poem in the meeting.

The association remembered his worldwide achievements and conveyed its deep sympathies to the family members and prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul.
