TINSUKIA, March 10 - People in their hundreds descended on National Highway-38 at Bogapani, about 3 kms from Digboi and blocked the road for several hours in protest against the eviction drive carried out against encroachers on railway land near Bogapani Railway Station by the Tinsukia Division of NF Railway today.

The Railway authority with the help of the civil authority launched the drive from the morning hours. Some people subsequently gathered and protested against the railway eviction drive.

Later, they blocked the road, resulting in traffic snarls. Higher police and sub-divisional administration officials subsequently brought the situation under control and cleared the road blockade. Though the eviction drive was called off today, but it will reportedly continue tomorrow.

It may be mentioned that land all along the railway tracks are the property of Indian Railways. In Tinsukia district, such land has been illegally encroached upon by some people over the years. Though the Railway authority had launched eviction drives on earlier occasions too, but a section of evicted people again encroached upon NFR land.
