Employees of James Warren Tea Limited stage protest

DOOMDOOMA, Jan 30: Employees as well as retired staff of James Warren Tea Ltd (JWTL) situated in Upper Assam under the aegis of Assam Chah Karmachari Sangha (ACKS) staged a three-hour sit-in strike in front of the Registered Office of the JWTL at Dhoedaam Tea Estate here on Wednesday for non-fulfilment of their demands like releasing pension to the retired employees, filling up the vacant posts and promotions, providing referral or group hospital or alternate healthcare facility, regularisation of the post of teachers working as daily-rated workers and not to curtail other facilities enjoyed by the employees. – Correspondent

1 held for suspected murder

BOKAKHAT, Jan 30: One Sima Das, wife of Simanta Hazarika of No.1 Gareimari Gaon of Mohuramukh under Kamargaon Police Station of Bokakhat subdivision was found killed after being burnt on the evening of January 28 at her husband’s residence. Though efforts were made to make the murder look like a case of suicide, after primary probe, Kamargaon Police arrested Simanta after carefully considering his antecedents. It may be mentioned that Simanta very often tortured his wife for dowry, for which he was arrested last year. Sima, an inhabitant of Panbari Model Village, about 3 kms from Bokakhat Police Station, was married a few months back. – ANN Service

SFI memo to Education Minister

DOOMDOOMA, Jan 30: The Tinsukia district committee of Students’ Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest in front of the SDO (Civil) Office of Sadiya sub-division on Friday demanding immediate solution of the problems faced by the government educational institutions of Sadiya. Later, the agitating students’ body sent a memorandum to the Education Minister of Assam through the SDO (Civil) of Sadiya sub-division demanding the government to fill up 40 vacant posts of Sadiya Government Higher Secondary School and 7 posts of Sadiya College to improve the infrastructure of the educational institutions of Sadiya sub-division, etc. – Correspondent

Body of newborn found

DOOMDOOMA, Jan 30: The body of a newborn female baby was found under a bridge on the Doomdooma-Phillobari Road near Ghurni under Phillobari Police Station of Tinsukia district today. The body was wrapped in a red- coloured polythene bag. Police sent the body for postmortem. – Correspondent
