Newly-built flyover on NH-31 at Pathsala damaged

By ANN Service

PATACHARKUCHI, Aug 1 - The pathetic condition of a newly-constructed flyover on the National Highway 31 over a rail crossing in Pathsala of Bajali subdivision has exposed the reality of poor construction work.

Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Munindra Sharma and Superintendent of Police Dr Robin Kumar had inspected the newly-constructed flyover, and ordered the construction company to repair the bridge along with the road under it. Around two months have elapsed, but the construction company is yet to start repair of the flyover.

People here have lamented that the new flyover, that too in an important corridor of the North East, the NH-31, was damaged just six months after it was opened for the public. The construction work in the area continued for 14 years, and the road turned into an accident-prone area and a number of accidents took place.

The bridge was reportedly being constructed at a snails pace by the construction company, but due to the heavy traffic jam on NH-31 and the public demand, the local administration demanded the construction company, KMC, to complete the work as soon as possible and open the flyover for the public.

The people have also alleged that due to the poor standard of construction by KMC from Kaljar to Bezkuchi, a stretch of 27 km, lot of potholes and cracks have appeared along the road. At present, many portions of the flyover have eroded. The construction company hurriedly repaired the damaged portions but that was not enough.

The people here are demanding an inquiry into the poor and faulty construction work of such an important road and bridge. This faulty construction has led to resentment among the local people and various organisations like AASU, AJYCP, etc. A huge amount of money was also reportedly released for planting of saplings on the middle lane of the road but there has been no such plantation.
