New recruits in State Border Police soon

By Sanjoy Ray

GUWAHATI, Dec 6 - Border policing in Assam is all set receive a major boost with Dispur paving the way for the appointment of more than 300 ex-servicemen in different capacities the next one weeks time. The appointments also assume significance for the fact that not a single candidate has been allowed home district posting this time.

Sources at Dispur told The Assam Tribune that of the 391 posts, only 307 candidates could fulfil the criteria and special instructions have been issued not to post anyone in their home district. Sources added that 120 of the new recruits are in the rank of havildar, while 103 would be absorbed as head constables. In addition to this, 77 sub-inspectors will be filled, besides some posts of inspectors.

Once the new batch of

police personnel are inducted, it would add teeth to the efficiency level of the border police in the State, source said, adding that the appointments would be made keeping in view the existing strength position of different districts of Assam.

Unlike previous years where there were allegations relating to home district appointment to some favoured candidates, the government this time around has made up its mind against such practices, sources said.

Sources, however, added that the Assam Police Border Organisation, which is on the verge of completion of the required paper works, has been directed to consider posting at the nearest district option, if possible.

Posting in the Border Police, in the recent years, has attracted controversies, even propelling the judiciary to step in. At present, the Border Police has 4,037 sanctioned posts whereas its actual strength as of day stands at 2,726, leaving vacancy of more than 1,300 posts.

As far as the latest recruitment drive of ex-servicemen is concerned, the present strength is around 786 and with the new batch of appointments, it will be somewhere around 1,093.
