GUWAHATI, Feb 27: The All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) has appointed Sukumar Basumatary as its president in place of Milan Sonowal.

It needs mention here that Sonowal, after joining the Assam Jatiya Parishad, had requested the AATS to release him from the post of president. “Considering his request, the vice president of AATS Sukumar Basumatary has been appointed unanimously to the post for the next
three years,” Sangha general secretary Aditya Khaklari said.

In a joint meeting of the new and old committees of the AATS, the tribal body raised the issue of protection of tribal blocks and belts, clearing the backlogs of posts reserved for the ST community and implementation of Forest Rights Act 2006, and rued the government’s apathetic attitude towards the long-pending issues of the tribal people of Assam.
