New party will not solve problem, says Mahanta

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 16 - Former Chief Minister and senior AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today said that formation of a new political party will not be the appropriate way to solve the problem arising in the wake of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Addressing a press conference, Mahanta said, In Indian democracy, everyone has the right to form a new political force. But at present for Assam it is not a solution.

Moreover, he added that the concept of a new political option has emerged in the State because the AGP leadership has not taken the right step in right time against the CAA. Even, he also alleged that incidents of vandalism in the AGP offices in many parts of the State had taken place due to the weak leadership of the party.

Earlier during an AGP legislative party meeting, I had advised every MLA to take the public view on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in their respective constituencies. But most of them did not follow my advice, Mahanta rued.

Slamming the present BJP-led State government, Mahanta stated that the government became wary over the intense mass movement due to which it has suspended internet services in many parts of Assam.

Suspension of internet services will not stop the mass protest. Because, in the history, every famous revolution took place without internet facility, he said.

He also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to understand the pulse of the Assamese people over the movement.

Terming the Act as a blanket order over the citizenship issue, Mahanta categorically stated that the Act should not be implemented in both Brahmaputra and Barak valleys of the State.
