New India can be built only when NE is developed: PM

ITANAGAR, Feb 9 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that a �new India� can only be possible when North East India undergoes speedy development in every field, while asserting that the region had remained neglected over the years.

Addressing a mammoth gathering at the Indira Gandhi Park here soon after unveiling a series of development projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore, Modi said, �New India can only be built when North East India can be developed. Development is for uniting the regions and the people.�

Without naming any party, the Prime Minister asked the people to compare 55 months of his Government with 55 years of the previous Governments with respect to development activities in Arunachal Pradesh and other North Eastern States.

He said that development did not take place at the pace it should have, while adding that �the previous governments neglected Arunachal Pradesh and we are here to change that�.

Modi also added that in the last 55 months, there has been no dearth of funds for development. He said, �Our government allocated Rs 44,000 crore to Arunachal Pradesh, which is double the amount provided by the previous Governments.�

The Prime Minister further said: �Arunachal Pradesh is India�s pride. It is India�s gateway on the security front, and I assure you all that we will not just ensure its safety and security, but also put it on a fast track of development.�

Also present on the occasion were Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Dr) BD Mishra (retd), Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Assembly Speaker Tenzing Norbu Thongdok and State BJP president Tapir Gao.
