NEW DELHI, April 16 The Centre is likely to announce the appointment of new Governors, including for Assam, within a week, official sources said.
In the running for the post of governorship is veteran State BJP leader Kabindra Purkayastha, Najma Heptullah, Yashwant Sinha, General VP Malik, and Arun Sathe, among others. The appointments are likely to be finalised after the return of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday night.
Sources said that the Prime Ministers Office is still undecided whether to appoint an ex-Armyman as Governor of Assam or send a person with political background. The thinking is to send a political man to Assam, where the BJP has high hopes.
There are also reports that Union Minister Najma Heptullah might be sent to Assam as Governor, seen as an attempt to woo the Muslim population of the State, said sources.
