SILCHAR, May 23 - In a bid to equip students and young surgeons with the nuances of temporal bone and skull-based surgery, a new dissection laboratory was opened at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Wednesday.

SMCH principal Dr Babul Bezbaruah formally inaugurated the laboratory in the Department of ENT cum Head and Neck Surgery in the presence of Dr Arun Bhattacharya, ex-principal and former head of the department of ENT cum Head and Neck Surgery, former head of the department Dr Prabhati Purkayastha, Dr BJ Dutta, head of the Department of Anatomy, Dr Shams Uddin, head of the department of ENT cum Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr Rubi Saikia, professor in the Department of Anatomy.

The opening of such an important laboratory following the guidelines of the Medical Council of India shall augment the academic discourse in understanding the subtle aspects of temporal bone and skull-based surgery. There are certain high-end surgeries in the ENT branch which require a thorough understanding of the anatomy of temporal bone-related finer issues, Dr Bezbaruah said.

Dr Tinku Moni Borah, a postgraduate student of the Department of ENT and also the president of the hospitals PG Doctors Association, expressed happiness over the inauguration of the laboratory. This is a welcome move by the SMCH administration. Hands-on training on the temporal bone and skull-based surgery shall enable us to have a firm grip on the critical aspects of the surgery and give us confidence and expertise in approaching cadaveric dissection of temporal bone and skull in the coming days, he said.

Dr Borah said that training sessions in the lab shall help students learn about cochlear implantation meant for deaf children.
