New branches for Mahanagar Sahitya Sabha

GUWAHATI, June 16 � The Kamrup Mahanagar Zila Sahitya Sabha (KMZSS) has decided to extend the areas of its operation by setting up additional 50 branches within the geographical area of the Zila Sabha and enlist a sizeable section of the city�s one million active literate adult population as members of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, a press release said. The KMZSS in its meeting held on Saturday at the Lakhiram Barua Sadan under the presidentship of DN Chakravarty also decided to constitute a special cell for women writers with a galaxi of eminent persons including Nirupama Borgohain, Anima Guha, Dr Minoti Hazarika, Dr Lili Rajbongshi, Manikuntala Bhattacharyya and Alakananda Dutta. Manju Dutta Barua will be in charge of the cell.

The meeting held under the presidentship of DN Chakravarty condoled the deaths of MF Hussain, Karuna Dutta Choudhury, Bijoy Bhuyan and victims of the Charabari Road accident. The secretary of the Zila Sahitya Sabha, Dimbeswar Pathak, read out the proceedings of the last meeting. Hemen Talukdar, vice president of the Zila Sahitya Sabha, explained the guidelines of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

The Sabha appealed to the Sakha Sabha to launch campaigns for enforcement of the Official Language Act in their respective areas and organise suitable programmes under �Ramdhenu� and �Akaash� as directed by the central Sabha. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Pabitra Kalita, Dr Suryya Kanta Sabha, Dasu Kalita, Karuna Barman, Jagadish Sarma, Mrinalini Devi and Durgeswar Pathak stressed the need for activating all the defunct Sakha Sabhas.

Chakravarty, in his presidential remarks, urged the members to raise substantial funds for the Zila Sabha in order to execute various ambitious programmes including lectures by Nobel laureates, the release added.
