New biodiversity park in Hailakandi

HAILAKANDI, Nov 22 - A new biodiversity park, named Sahitya Manishi Upaban, under the Department of Forests was inaugurated at Lalacherra in Hailakandi district on Saturday by Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya. Katlicherra MLA Nizam Uddin Laskar, Algapur, PCCF HOFF AM Singh, Principal Secretary Avinash Joshi, PCCF, Wildlife Amit Sahay, Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Megh Nidhi Dahal, CCF LAZ, Akashdeep Baruah and DFO, Cachar Forest Division, Sunnydeo Chou-dhury, were present in the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, Suklabaidya said the park has different medicinal plants, which are immensely beneficial to health. He said Assam is rich in biodiversity and the government is giving added thrust to it by setting up biodiversity parks across the State. �The park will attract people and inspire them to conserve biodiversity,� he added.

Suklabaidya underlined the need to make the new generation aware about the importance of protecting the environment in the wake of problems like climate change and global warming.

�The State government has been taking a slew of steps to preserve and protect biodiversity and these parks are part of this initiative,� he said.

This park is one of the 24 biodiversity parks being set up by the Department of Forests across 24 districts under the CAMPA scheme. Six parks have already been set up. Each park, covering an area of two to three hectares, will be designed to preserve local medicinal plants and other varieties.
