New award for teachers in State soon

GUWAHATI, Sept 5 - The Assam Government will institute an award for teachers in the name of Dr Krishna Kanta Handiqui. This was disclosed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi while addressing a function on the occasion of the Teachers� Day at the Gauhati Medical College auditorium here today.

The Chief Minister said that teachers are the architects of the society. Students are the future of the country and teachers play a major role in developing the careers of the students, he added.

Gogoi said that the State Government has been taking a number of steps for the welfare of students. In this regard, he said that keeping the future of the students in mind, the Government has initiated steps like distribution of computers, etc. He said that the UPA Government had brought the historic Right to Education Bill in the interest of human resource development.

Education Minister Sarat Barkataky said that the Government would set up two regional offices of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam, in Jorhat and Silchar. He also disclosed that from next year onwards, the SEBA would select 20 toppers in the HSLC examination.
