NEHU students to launch fresh stir against VC

By The Assam Tribune

SHILLONG, Oct 31 Peeved at the Centres failure to remove the newly- appointed vice chancellor AN Rai from the post, students of the North Eastern Hill University will launch a non-cooperation movement tomorrow.

The Meghalaya Tribal Students Coordination Committee (MTSCC), a conglomerate of several student bodies, decided to call for the indefinite non-cooperation movement to press for removal of tainted Rai who was appointed as the VC on October 11.

The strike is likely to see a complete shutdown of the university.

The Centre has betrayed us and we are all set to revert back to our agitation till our demand is met with. We will not cooperate with AN Rai. We want that either he should step down or he should be immediately removed as the vice chancellor, MTSCC chairman Kynpham Kharlyngdoh said.

Rai had earned a bad name after a controversy in Mizoram University over a recruitment row when he was the VC there.

Earlier, a Central team had visited the university to take stock of the situation arising out of the appointment of the new vice chancellor.

The student representatives had told the team that the Centre should own up the mess it created in the University by appointing a Vice Chancellor like A N Rai whose term at the Mizoram University is yet to be completed.

The MTSCC, comprising the Khasi Students Union, Achik Post-Graduate Students Union and the Meghalaya Post-Graduate Students Union, has been demanding appointment of a local educationist to the office of the vice-chancellor. PTI
