Need for good children films stressed

GUWAHATI, Dec 10 � Governor JB Patnaik on Saturday stressed the need for more good films for children so that they can imbibe values like discipline, tolerance and humanity and be able to expand their sphere of knowledge.

Inaugurating the European Union Sanskriti Festival organised by The Delegation of the European Union in New Delhi, The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in New Delhi, The Embassies of the member States of European Union in collaboration with the Gauhati Cine Club held at the auditorium of district library here, Patnaik said that children require entertainment which is healthy and good films serve the purpose of healthy entertainment.

It needs to be mentioned here that the weeklong Sanskriti Festival that will showcase some of the best European films for young people started off with screening of The Magic Tree from Poland.

The Ambassador of Poland in India, Piotr Klodkowski addressing the inaugural function said that for Poland and the European Union, it was a great moment to be here in Guwahati and bring a selected bouquet of films for the young people in Guwahati.

Klodkowski said that the European Union reflected the rich cultural diversity of its member States and that it was committed to providing young people of India with an exposure to global films. He said that cinema was a powerful medium and no matter what the language, the children can understand the films because of the universal appeal of good films.

Well known film maker Jahnu Baruah while speaking on the occasion said that it was important for children to develop a keen perception to understand and imbibe the values highlighted in all good films. �It is important for children to view films with a proper attitude,� he said adding that along with viewing, it was also necessary for children to read good books. He suggested to the young audience to read Ernest Hemingway�s The Old Man and the Sea to develop a strong sense of confidence.

The inaugural function was attended by many dignitaries from the European Union including Pavel Svitil, Charge d Affaires, delegation of the European Union in India.
