GUWAHATI, June 16 - In view of the rising incidence of brain tumours, GNRC Hospitals has urged the people to be aware of the disorder and circulated an educative booklet on the symptoms of the disease.
The booklet highlights the rising number of brain tumour cases in the country and the measures to be taken to cure the disease during initial stages.
Dr Navanil Barua, director, neurosurgery, in his address to media on Friday, highlighted the issues involved and stressed the need for enhancing public awareness.
�As the incidence of brain tumour is on the rise in the country, it is also evident that different kinds of tumours manifest at different stages of life. While most cases have unknown causes, some are linked to genetic diseases such as neurofibromatosis and exposure to ionizing radiation. As per reports, 40,000-50,000 new cases of brain tumour are reported every year in India,� he said.
Dr Barua said less than 50 per cent individuals with brain tumour have their condition diagnosed and the symptoms of brain tumours are not always specific, but persistent or recurrent symptoms like unexplained headaches, difficulty in speech, vision and hearing, unexplained nausea-vomiting, gait problems, changes in mood or ability to concentrate, memory loss, numbness or tingling in the legs or arms or seizures are all causes for concern.
Consulting a neurosurgeon immediately in such cases is necessary, he added.
