NEC plenary from tomorrow

SHILLONG, July 7 - The 67th plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) will begin here on Monday in which a number of key developmental issues of the region would be taken up for discussion.

The two-day session will be chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at the State Convention Centre here. Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh and NEC members will participate in the conference.

The session will see discussions on the ongoing projects in the region, including infrastructure projects related to connectivity, be it roads, bridges, airports and others. Officials from relevant ministries will be present in the meetings to give presentations and details about these projects.

�Discussions would be held how to complete these long-pending projects within the stipulated time-frame,� an NEC official said.

The yet-to-be launched Ayushman Bharat or the universal health insurance scheme would also be taken up for discussion and officials from the Union Ministry of Health would give their presentation on this important scheme and the way forward.

Some of the other Central schemes that would be discussed are Poshan Abhiyan or the National Nutrition Mission and the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, an outreach programme to deliver Central welfare schemes to rural areas.

There would also be discussions held on the progress made in the 14 �aspirational districts� of the region out of the 106 in the country. The objective of the programme is to see that these 106 districts are at par with the best districts of the country in terms of health, education, water resource, education and other 49 progress indicators.

Officials will also discuss continuation of NEC schemes till March, 2020 as approved by the Cabinet in March 2018. Moreover, strengthening the livelihood programmes in the region, water resources management, catchment area treatment through afforestation and doubling farmers� income by 2022 in the region would be the other topics of discussion.
