IMPHAL, Oct 23 - In a move to encourage sports climbing in Manipur, the 22nd North East Zone Sports Climbing Competition got under way on Friday with active participation of around 121 climbers from all the Northeastern States. The competition is being organised by the Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) at its Minuthong complex here.
Hosts Manipur (30) has the largest number of climbers while Meghalaya (7) has the least number of competitors. Around 20 climbers from Assam are participating in the speed climbing competition which is scheduled to conclude on October 25. Troops of 9 Sector Assam Rifles based here presented sports equipments to MMTA for the ongoing competition. The inclusion of Sports Climbing event in 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games has given hope to the young climbers of the State to showcase their talent. The Assam Rifles is co-sponsoring the event.
