NE to celebrate Christmas today

SHILLONG, Dec 24 - Churches, shops and trees in Meghalaya State Capital Shillong have been decked up with decorated lights and people are preparing for the midnight mass on the occasion of Christmas.

At Police Bazaar, the rotary and the old Assembly complex have also been lit with colourful lights and Stars. People at Police Bazaar finished their last minute shopping and there was a major rush at bakeries as people bought cakes and other confectionaries.

As in other years, the 80-feet tall tree at All Saints Cathedral has been decorated with lights and it has been one of the attractions every year during Christmas. The tree is said to be over a century old.

The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians at Dhankheti has been similarly decked up. It is one of the biggest Churches in the State of the Catholic denomination.

State Governor Ganga Prasad and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma have greeted the people on the occasion. Prasad in his message conveyed his heartiest greetings and good wishes to the people.

�As we celebrate Christmas, let us resolve to revere the spirit of Christmas by treating one another with love and compassion, and by resolving to share and care for the mankind,� Prasad said.

In his message, Sangma said, �let the spirit of love, hope, peace, compassion and forgiveness, which are the essence of Jesus Christ�s teachings be the guiding principle of our daily lives.�

Imphal Correspondent adds: Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla has conveyed her warm greetings to the people of Manipur, especially to the Christian brethren, on the sacred occasion of Christmas.

�Lord Jesus was a giant among humans and his preaching of peaceful coexistence and love for neighbour has withstood the test of time,� said Dr Heptulla in a message on the eve of Christmas.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh also greeted the people on the occasion of Christmas.

Itanagar Correspondent adds: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig Dr BD Mishra (Retd) and Chief Minister Pema Khandu today conveyed their warm greetings and good wishes to the people of the State on the occasion of Christmas and Good Governance Day.

In his message, the Governor said that Christmas, the festival of light and love is the occasion for fraternity, joy and promotion of good will. It is also an opportunity to ensure mutual trust and confidence between people of different belief, faith and culture.

As December 25 is also being observed as Good Governance Day to commemorate the birthday of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister, the Governor said, �On this Day, our government reiterates its resolve to provide transparent and accountable administration which works for the betterment and welfare of the last man in the social order (Antyodaya).

Khandu also extended his sincerest greetings on the occasion of Christmas, a festival that spreads the message of love, harmony and peace beyond boundaries and religious affinities. �This Christmas, let us bring joy to others with an act of kindness,� he said.
