NE tennis championship gets under way

IMPHAL, May 6 � The 2nd North East Cash Prize Tennis Champion began at the courts of Officer Club premises at Lamphelpat here yesterday. The championship is being organised by Manipur Tennis Association (MATA) with Additional DGP LM Khaute and MATA president T Panmei as the guests of the opening session. Altogether five NE States � Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and players from Silchar are participating in the week-long championship which is scheduled to continue till May 12.

The cash prizes of the championship ranges from Rs 30,000 to 4,000.

On the second day of the championship today, Manipur�s Kangjamba beat Dr A Dutta of Silchar 6-1,7-6,7-2 in the qualifying round while Manipur�s H Becker, Rebhaskar and N Premjit defeated Assam�s A Dutta, A Jayav, Ny Meitei respectively in the first round of men�s singles. Similarly Nagaland�s Vitsizolie and Mizoram�s HD Zathang Leina beat A Jain and Rupam Gogoi both from Assam respectively.
