NE remembers Kargil heroes

IMPHAL, July 27 � Manipur soldiered on during the Kargil War, said Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Kargil Vijay Diwas Day at Bir Tikendrajit Park here.

Seven martyred soldiers of Manipur were honoured yesterday at the Kargil Vijay Diwas function with floral tribute and gun salute. They were lance naik Kaleshore, sepoy Charles Nicholas Moyon, sepoy Beningvir Moyon, lance naik Birneithang, sepoy Zamkholal Vaiphei, sepoy Kapani Asuli and sepoy Daikho Mao.

Attending the observance ceremony of the victory of Indian soldiers at Kargil in 1999 as a chief guest, the chief minister lauded the sacrifices made by the jawans in protecting Indian territory at Kargil War against the intruding Pakistani army.

Indian soldiers conducted a daring operation called Vijay at the height of the 1999 war with Pakistan that successfully flushed out enemy intruders from India�s territory he added.

The event today was exclusively a government affair with only top government official invited. Besides the chief minister, cabinet ministers, DGP, chief secretary, MLAs, and other high ranking government officials graced the observance day.

PTI adds from Kohima: Assam Rifles celebrated Kargil Day as �Vijay Divas� by paying tribute to Capt Neikezhakuo Kenguruse, an Angami Naga youth who made the supreme sacrifice during the Kargil war.

A solemn function was held at the martyr memorial at Pheza Village near here which was attended by rank and file of the paramilitary force, family members of late Kenguruse, village elders of Nerhema and neighbouring villages and school children.

Capt Kenguruse was killed while destroying enemy bunkers and killing four enemy soldiers on June 28, 1999 during the Kargil War in Drass sub-sector. � PTI
