NEW DELHI, Sept 24 Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given top priority to the Northeastern region, Union Minister of State for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs and Sports, Sarbananda Sonowal said here today.

Sonowal, who was addressing a press conference to mark completion of 100 days in office, said that he has had held consultations with senior sports journalists at Guwahati and sports veterans to get their inputs regarding uplift of sports and youth affairs.

Replying to questions, he said that the Prime Minister has always accorded top priority to development of all these spheres in the North-East. Setting up of the countrys first sports university in Manipur is an example of this, he said.

Stating that skill development and entrepreneurship are critical for developing the youth as a productive workforce, he said his Ministry has initiated the process to revise the National Policy on Skill Development, 2009.

Comments are being obtained from the various Ministries of the Government of India. Once these comments are received, a draft policy will be placed on the website of the Ministry to invite comments from the public and other stakeholders.

A Committee of Secretaries on the Rationalisation of Government Schemes was set up. The committees report is with the Ministry, and we will be placing the report on the website of the Ministry for stakeholder comments from 1st to 15th October 2014. After considering all these comments, we intend to have the rationalised Scheme notified by the end of December 2014, he said.
