NEW DELHI, June 12 - Stressing that the North East has been given top priority, the Telecom Ministry has spent Rs 10,834 crore on projects in the region, Union Minister of State for Communication Manoj Sinha said here today.
Addressing a press conference to mark the completion of four years of the NDA Government, Sinha said that Communication Ministry is implementing two major projects in the North East.
In Assam, a couple of districts have been identified and lines are being laid along the national highway. Towers are being installed and the project is to be completed in 18 months, he added.
Admitting terrain in some hill districts was a challenge, Sinha said that wherever laying of lines was not possible, satellite links are being provided to ensure that the North East has good connectivity, said Sinha.
The minister further disclosed that 7,000 telecom towers are proposed to be installed for connectivity to over 8,600 villages, while a 3,200-km optical fibre cable network is projected to be laid, added the Union minister.
