NE DGPs meet to increase cooperation to check crimes

GUWAHATI, July 26 - DGPs of North Eastern States met at Imphal on Thursday and discussed strategies to combat several issues plaguing the region, including drug cartels, human trafficking and other inter-State crimes.

Chaired by Assam DGP Kula Saikia, the daylong conference dwelt at length on areas of cooperation and collaboration and use of modern technology to deal with the problems.

�The meeting discussed ways to stop pilferage of drugs. Focus was laid on supply reduction as well as demand reduction of narcotics. Human trafficking was another issue taken up. A decision was taken to rope in a research organisation to conduct a study on the causes, networks and routes,� Saikia said.

Inter-State crimes like smuggling of coal, supari, cattle was also taken up and the meeting resolved that each State should stop the illegalities at the place of origin and close coordination maintained with the transit states.

Areas where modern technology can be used to combat the crimes were also discussed. Representatives of Central organisations were also present at the meeting.
