NE Book Fair begins tomorrow

GUWAHATI, Dec 12 � The 13th North East Book Fair, organised by All Assam Publishers and Book Sellers Association, would be held at Assam Engineering Institute playground, Chandmari from December 14 to December 26.

The fair has been dedicated to the singing legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Addressing the media here, the president of the association Ajit Kumar Barman said that like every year, this year too, the book fair is expecting encouraging footfalls.

Among the publishers and book sellers participating in the fair, 21 are coming from Delhi, 25 from Kolkata, two from Mumbai, two from Siliguri and one each from Ludhiyana, Hyderabad, Patna, Agartala, and Chennai. Moreover, a good number of publishing houses are coming from Guwahati and other parts of the State.

More than 100 books would be release a in the book fair, said the organizers.

Noted litterateur Homen Bargohain would inaugurate the fair on December 14 in the presence of Padmasree Award winning novelist from Orissa Pratibha Roy, president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha Rong Bong Terang, DoNER Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, president of Raja Ram Mohun Roy Library Foundation K Bennerjee, among others. An intimate discussion with Pratibha Roy would also be organized during the fair. State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would release the souvenir Grantham on the occasion.

December 15 would be observed as the Bhupen Hazarika Day and a statute of Bhupen Hazarika would be unveiled by Anil Sarkar, Education Minister of Tripura. Discussions on various aspects of Dr Hazarika's life and work would be organized during the day along with a musical evening based on the music maestro.

The pavilion of the book fair has been dedicated to the Jnanpith Award winning writer Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami. A discussion on her life and literature would be held on December 24.

�This year, some of the very big and popular publishing houses are coming to the fair. Total 258 stalls would be put up in the fair. We are expecting a business of Rs 5 crore this year, which was around Rs 2 crore last year,� he said. The total budget of the fair is Rs 40 lakh.

The focal theme of this year�s book fair is Burhi Aair Sadhu. Discussions and various competitions on Burhi Aair Sadhu would be held among children.
