NE bank employees to join nationwide strike on Jan 8

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 5 - The Bank Employees Federation (North Eastern Region) will join the nationwide general strike to be held on January 8 as a protest against the merger and privatisation of public sector banks. The bank employees have also demanded strict action against wilful corporate defaulters and steps towards adequate recruitment in banks.

The strike coincides with a nationwide call by all central trade unions and federations in different sectors against the pro-corporate, anti-people and anti-national economic policies of the Central government, which have wreaked havoc on the economy and caused acute distress in farm and non-farm industrial sectors.

The Federation, in a statement, also alleged that such moves of the Central government are responsible for massive unemployment, where public money has been looted by a nexus of politicians, bureaucrats and corporates. Moreover, such steps are also responsible for the fall of GDP and the rise in inequality, it said.

The statement added that apart from public sector banks, all financial sectors employees, including the Reserve Bank of India, regional rural banks, etc. will also take part in the protest.

The Federation also called upon the bank employees in particular and people in general to stand united against the economic onslaught of the pro-big corporate BJP government and its agenda of triggering social disturbance in the name of unconstitutional Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
